THE STORY OF LAEKENOIS

On World dog show in Tulln in 1986 I saw a Belgian Sheepdog Laekenois for the first time in my life. It was a girl Oud Sabbinge Fabrina van Donald, who came to show from Denmark. I liked her unkempt look and her beautiful eyes. She looked to me like a mixture of elegant sheepdog and a terrier and I immediately liked her because she was so unusual and so special among dog breeds.

I fell for her and would have such doggie soon but I was still too young then and I had my lovely Yorkie Gari. My parents told me I should first finish high school and then get a second dog if my wish is still so ardent. So I waited until I started going to university.

That was in 1991. When I saw Max van Kriekebos on World dog show in Dortmund in springtime of 1991, I decided that my laekenois will also be from »van Kriekebos« kennel. I preferred their type, attractive appearance and body structure. Evelyn Comeine from Van Kriekebos kennel established a distinctive type of Laekenois known world wide for their beauty. So I wrote her a letter inquiring for a typical show and breed quality girl puppy. And I had big luck since she had a puppy suitable for me in October litter. So Lejka (Plume van Kriekebos) was born on the 15th October in a litter of 7 girls. Her mother was Nouchka van Kriekebos, a very beautiful and tall girl and her father was Nobel van Balderlo, known for his great looks and temperamet. Since Evelyn knew I wanted a show dog she chose Lejka for me because she believed that Lejka and Paige were best puppies in the litter. Paige went to Finland and sadly died at 3 years of age, while Lejka came to Slovenia and lived almost 16 years.
